Daily Devotional: Psalms 144:1-8

Ps 144:1-8

1 Praise be to the LORD my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle. 2 He is my loving God and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me. 3 O LORD, what is man that you care for him, the son of man that you think of him? 4 Man is like a breath; his days are like a fleeting shadow. 5 Part your heavens, O LORD, and come down; touch the mountains, so that they smoke. 6 Send forth lightning and scatter the enemies; shoot your arrows and rout them. 7 Reach down your hand from on high; deliver me and rescue me from the mighty waters, from the hands of foreigners 8 whose mouths are full of lies, whose right hands are deceitful.

Eph 3:14-17

14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.

From the time David fought his first battle against Goliath, he trusted God for his strength and to give him the victory. At the time of this battle, he was but as lad and had never fought anyone, especially not a man in armor who was over nine feet tall! Add to this that he also had a man in front of him holding a shield to protect him. David went to battle with only a sling and five smooth stones, but he went in the name of the Lord, the God of heaven and earth and in his might.

We face our battles today. We are in a spiritual war but it has a very real and material side to it. We face sickness, we face accidents, we face relationship problems, we face financial reverses and disasters. Add to this all of the social unrest we have around us and the so-called pandemic that fills so many hearts with fear and dread and we see that our spiritual battles are indeed physical.

Fear is the opposite of trust. Doubt or worry come from the absence or lack of faith. Jesus often responded to the disciples with “O you of little faith.” We cannot trust in ourselves or in things and trust in God at the same time.

Heavenly Father it is so wonderful to be able to trust you in everything. You have carried me through so many trials in my life and you have delivered me from men who sought to ruin me and tried to discourage me from speaking your word. You have given me strength to fight against “giants” and impossible situations. To be sure, there have been far too many times I failed to trust you and have failed to live up to your word but you have never failed me. Thank you for being merciful and compassionate to me. Use me to your glory. I pray in Jesus name.
