Daily Devotional: Psalms 145:1-7
Ps 145:1-7
1 I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever. 2 Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever. 3 Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom. 4 One generation will commend your works to another; they will tell of your mighty acts. 5 They will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty, and I will meditate on your wonderful works. 6 They will tell of the power of your awesome works, and I will proclaim your great deeds. 7 They will celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness.
Phil 4:8-9
8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me or seen in me-put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
We become what we think about. When we focus our minds on the problems in life and the evil that prevails, we become negative and often take on the qualities that we dislike so much. When we focus our minds on God and his qualities, the more we will become like him. When we think about things that are wholesome and right, good and lovely and things that are true and pure, the more we will take on these qualities as our own. We must not allow evil to overcome good.
This is not denying reality. When we hurt, we hurt. When the bills are not paid and we have no money, we are broke. But we can still focus on God and on the things above, where Christ is seated at the Father’s right hand. We can still see the lovely world around us and concentrate on things that are pure and true.
We live in a world filled with lies (often called false information) but we do not have to fill our minds with these things. Everything around us is filled with all kinds of immorality and impurity but we do not have to think on these things or fill our minds with them. We can stay off of those websites or change the channel on the television or the station on the radio. We can avoid immoral movies.
Heavenly Father it is such a blessing to serve a God of love and a God who is absolute in purity and kindness. Help me fill my mind with your goodness and all of the traits that make you who you are so I will become more like you. Keep me focused on the positive and not all of the negative things around me. Open my heart to your Spirit so I can have his fruit abundantly in my life. Use me and all you have given me to help others and to honor your Holy name. I pray for your children who are suffering, wherever they are. In Jesus name I pray.
