Daily Devotional: Psalms 1:1-6
Ps 1:1-6
1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. 4 Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. 6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
Phil 1:9-11
9 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, 10 so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ-to the glory and praise of God.
As we begin another trip through the Psalms (this will be the eighth time since 2008), we will alter our format at times. We have looked at each Psalm from many different ways in the past. If you are seeing this on the Ephesus church of Christ website, on Facebook, or getting it by email, it is my prayer that it serves as a blessing to you each day. Thank you for reading these devotionals, for your comments and for your prayers on my behalf. May God be praised by them.
If we put on a pair of white gloves and go work in the garden or flower bed, we will never find the dirt turning white but the gloves will always be tainted by the dirt and grime. When we walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers, we will be influenced by the evil. Paul said we cannot leave this world (in this life) but we are not to be a part of it.
Unless we are living in a shell, we will be influenced to some degree by the world around us. When we allow our minds to be filled by the media and entertainment world, we will be drawn away from God. But rather than allow these to shape us and our thinking, we are to fill our minds with the word of God and allow his Spirit to mold us and shape us into his image. This will not happen by accident but must be a mindful and determined effort on our part. Be filled with his righteousness.
Heavenly Father I am so grateful for your love for me. You have provided me with all I need to be like you and to always make the right decisions in my life but I too often fail in doing this. Help me remember that serving you is more than just me thinking and doing right toward you but is also about me serving others and using what you have given me to help others. Keep me from being judgmental toward others or self-righteous or being selfish in my attitude. In Jesus name.
