Daily Devotional: Psalms 7:10-17

Ps 7:10-17

10 My shield is God Most High, who saves the upright in heart. 11 God is a righteous judge, a God who expresses his wrath every day. 12 If he does not relent, he will sharpen his sword; he will bend and string his bow. 13 He has prepared his deadly weapons; he makes ready his flaming arrows. 14 He who is pregnant with evil and conceives trouble gives birth to disillusionment. 15 He who digs a hole and scoops it out falls into the pit he has made. 16 The trouble he causes recoils on himself; his violence comes down on his own head. 17 I will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.

Rom 8:12-15

12 Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation-but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, 14 because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

God knows and sees every time anyone on earth violates his will. He sees every sin that is committed, no matter how big or small. Since he is a holy God, it will always grieve him, or trouble him or at times it will anger him. When our attitude is to do his will and we fail, we sin and he feels mercy and compassion toward us because of our weakness. But when one turns their back on him and just ignores his word and his warnings, he is made angry. From his word, we see that at times he will punish people in this life and at other times it waits for judgment.

But like the small boy who wants to do all he can to please his grandmother, we should have a burning desire to do the will of God. Not because of punishment or fear of it but because we love him for all he has done for us. John tells us that perfected love is when we have allowed the love of God to change us and we love him in return and thus, we seek to please him in every way.

When we follow the bidding of his Spirit and not the desires of our flesh, we are being led by the Spirit to become more like him each day. As he molds us into his likeness, we see the result (fruit) of the Spirit become obvious in our lives.

Heavenly Father I am weak and I do and say things that I regret. I look back and I see so many things that I plan to do for you in serving others, but they never seem to get done. I need your help, your motivation and your strength every day to be more like you and to follow your every desire for me. Give me greater self-control so I will do my part to work out what you work in me. Thank you for your mercy and your patience with me and for all the many things you do for me. Give me a pure and loving heart like the Psalmist David. I pray in the name of Jesus.
