Daily Devotional: Psalms 10:1-11

Ps 10:1-11

1 Why, O LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? 2 In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises. 3 He boasts of the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD. 4 In his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God. 5 His ways are always prosperous; he is haughty and your laws are far from him; he sneers at all his enemies. 6 He says to himself, "Nothing will shake me; I'll always be happy and never have trouble." 7 His mouth is full of curses and lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue. 8 He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent, watching in secret for his victims. 9 He lies in wait like a lion in cover; he lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net. 10 His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength. 11 He says to himself, "God has forgotten; he covers his face and never sees."

It seems that some things never change. There have always been those who do not serve God but who are filled with pride and all kinds of wickedness. On top of this, they seem to prosper and seem to never have any troubles. Does God not care that his people are being mistreated? Why and how do these ungodly ones seem to have such favor with so many other people? Where is God in this?

God allows people to make their own choices in life. We can choose to serve him in faith or we can just ignore him in our arrogance. Satan is the prince of this world and he can bless those whom he chooses to bless and he can bring trouble on the people of God also. The power of the devil is often overlooked in our thinking and this is a mistake indeed. He is the great deceiver.

God does see and God does care. He hates pride and he does not ignore those who are seeking to harm his people. But he does allow freedom of thought and we do have to go through trials to prove and to build our faith in him. God will always be with his own and give the strength needed to endure whatever we may face in life. And then comes judgment where everything will be made right.

Heavenly Father it is with deep humility that I come to you and ask you to give me greater faith, more strength and your wisdom from above. Help me enjoy your blessings every day and at the same time to endure the trials that come. Use me to help someone know you and to trust you. Help me guard every word and think carefully about what I say so that my words will build others up and never tear down. Be with those who are struggling physically and emotionally. Give your peace to those who are hurting. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
