Daily Devotional: Psalms 12:1-8
Ps 12:1-8
1 Help, LORD, for the godly are no more; the faithful have vanished from among men. 2 Everyone lies to his neighbor; their flattering lips speak with deception. 3 May the LORD cut off all flattering lips and every boastful tongue 4 that says, "We will triumph with our tongues; we own our lips--who is our master?" 5 "Because of the oppression of the weak and the groaning of the needy, I will now arise," says the LORD. "I will protect them from those who malign them." 6 And the words of the LORD are flawless, like silver refined in a furnace of clay, purified seven times. 7 O LORD, you will keep us safe and protect us from such people forever. 8 The wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honored among men.
1 Kings 19:9-10
9 There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the LORD came to him: "What are you doing here, Elijah?" 10 He replied, "I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too."
Did you ever feel like you are the only person you know that is trying to serve the Lord and do what is right? The world has gone crazy and is filled with evil. People do not even care about what is pleasing to God. We live in a world filled with all kinds of immorality and where greed abounds. Even the ones who profess to serve God do not seem to be sincere and have become worldly too.
Elijah thought he was alone too but God told him that there were over seven thousand in Israel who had not bowed the knee to Baal. Elijah was ready to give up because all the work he was doing seemed to be in vain. God told him to get up and go to work because he still had everything under his control.
In the darkest night, God is still light and his light will shine through us when we let it. Yes, the world is evil but probably not as bad as the days of Noah. There is all kinds of immorality but not as immoral as Sodom, where Lot remained faithful to God. “The wicked freely strut” but God will bring them to judgment.
O Lord God keep me from being overwhelmed with all the evil in the world. There are those who seem to be in control who do not honor you or recognize you as God. There are those who seem bent on making all kinds of immorality acceptable to the world. Help me never forget that you see it all and you are always watching over your own to protect us – to protect me. Increase my faith and give me a pure heart. Help me remember that this world is not my home but I am just here for a while, getting ready to live with you in eternity. I pray in Jesus name.
