Daily Devotional: Psalms 18:25-30

Ps 18:25-30

25 To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless, 26 to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the crooked you show yourself shrewd. 27 You save the humble but bring low those whose eyes are haughty. 28 You, O LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light. 29 With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall. 30 As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him.

Titus 1:15-16

15 To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted. 16 They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.

The simplicity of life never ceases to amaze me. While millions of people have used almost as many methods and spent billions of dollars to lose weight, it seems a never ending and vicious cycle for most. Yet, it really is simple for most to lose the pounds needed. When we burn more calories than we eat, we lose. The same is true for gaining strength. The more we exercise, the stronger we become, when we eat right and get the required rest. Pretty simple principles.

The same is true spiritually. The closer we walk with God, the closer he comes to us. The more we open our hearts to the Spirit, the more we see his fruit produced in us. The more we imitate Jesus, the more we become like him. But we must make the commitment and we must practice the self-control. We have to exercise our senses to know good from evil and with practice, it becomes part of us.

But like losing weight, becoming godly takes time. It means we have to change our lifestyle and not just follow a few rules for a short time. When we become a Christian, we are to become a new creation in Jesus. We then take off the old person and put on the new one which is made in the likeness of our Lord. Instead of thinking about what pleases us, we must think about what pleases God. Now it is not what we want, but what God wants us to be. We now live for his glory.

Lord, while all this sounds simple, I need your wisdom all day, every day. I also need the strength of your Spirit to be able to have the self-control I need to not do some things and to make myself do others. So, until I am totally transformed into your image, be with me, guide me and empower me. As I come to know you better, help me remember that at my best, I am what I am by your grace. And at my worst, you are still working in me and molding me into your likeness. Give your grace and peace to those who are struggling. I pray in Jesus name.
