Daily Devotional: Psalms 19:7-12
Ps 19:7-14
7 The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. 8 The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous. 10 They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. 11 By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. 12 Who can discern his errors? Forgive my hidden faults. 13 Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then will I be blameless, innocent of great transgression. 14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.
Several years ago I had a young man who worked for me that had been raised in a very bad homelife. His mom was on drugs and his dad was totally selfish. He said that the only gifts his dad had ever given him were used because he only gave his discards to his son. When the dad bought himself a new fishing rod, he gave his old one to his son, etc. Needless to say, this young man had self-esteem issues. He also told me that his dad did not even know the names of his grandchildren and had never spent any time with them, even at holidays. He was self-centered.
In stark contrast to this, we have a heavenly Father who controls the entire world and universe but who knows each of us by name and only wants what is best for us. To love is to give and our God loved everyone in the world so much that he gave his special and unique Son to come live and die for us on earth so that we can live with him in eternity in his glorious home above. Jesus gave up the glories of his heavenly home and his exalted position there, to put our needs above his own. This is true love, not what we give to God but what he has done for us.
His word, his revelation to us, is for our good. We should count it a joy to know what God wants and to know how to live for him. Our desire should be to bring glory to him and his name in all we do and all we say. This is why we strive to walk in his light, even as he is light. In so doing, by grace he forgives all of our sins.
Heavenly Father I am so thankful for the life you have given me. Thank you that I had parents who loved me and who did all they could to guide me and to teach me to love you and serve you. Thank you for the love they always showed to me and all that they did for me. I ask your mercies on the many children who do not have such a blessed homelife. Use me to help them know Jesus and to know you as their Father. Forgive my hidden faults and keep me from willful sin. Let all the words of my mouth and my thoughts be pleasing to you. In Jesus name.
