Daily Devotional: Psalms 40:1-8

Ps 40:1-8

1 I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. 2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD. 4 Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods. 5 Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare. 6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you have pierced; burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require. 7 Then I said, "Here I am, I have come--it is written about me in the scroll.   8 I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart."

Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust. What does it mean to trust the Lord? What is the faith that saves us? It is best described and defined in this Psalm for us when he said: I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart. Faith is not doing the will of God but faith is the total, unequivocal submission to the will of God so that it becomes our own will. Trust in God says to him that we are his, he is the potter and we are the clay. It does not argue or try to rationalize for its own purposes, desires or reasonings.

Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done. If I were to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare. What has God done for you? For us to try to name them all would be futile. Think about the donkey that saw the angel and saved the life of Balaam. How many times has the angel of the Lord been in our path and the circumstances were altered to keep us from being destroyed? God can send the rain to make the crops grow or he can withhold it so that the farmer loses everything. But it is not just the farmer that is affected, but our entire economy is blessed or suffers. So many decisions are made by others that we know nothing of, and yet they often impact each of us. God can control each of these for his own purposes. So why would we not trust the Lord God?

Many, O Lord my God, are the wonders you have done! Open my eyes to see the many blessings you shower on me each day. You have flooded my life with good things, with your protection, your direction and in so many other ways and yet, I tend to argue with the donkey that I am riding. Increase my faith so that I will trust you without any reservation or hesitation. Give me a positive outlook on life so I will see the good all around me and in others and not focus on the bad. Use me in your way, in your time and for your purposes. In Jesus name.
