Daily Devotional: Psalms 56:7-13
Ps 56:7-13
7 On no account let them escape; in your anger, O God, bring down the nations. 8 Record my lament; list my tears on your scroll--are they not in your record? 9 Then my enemies will turn back when I call for help. By this I will know that God is for me. 10 In God, whose word I praise, in the LORD, whose word I praise--11 in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? 12 I am under vows to you, O God; I will present my thank offerings to you. 13 For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.
Matt 26:26-29
26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body." 27 Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom."
I was reading the other day about a football coach who was not doing so well in the win/loss part of his job. Some were saying he needs to be let go (fired) from his job but others were saying they should not because of the huge price of buying out his contract. After all, the school is still paying several million dollars a year to the former coach that they let go before the end of his contract.
A contract is a covenant that is a legal document requiring something in exchange for something else. It may be a work contract or buying a house, a car or even a lawn mower but it is binding on both parties to fulfill the terms it contains.
When we were baptized into Christ, we entered into a contract that said we were committing our life to God and in exchange he was promising to forgive us of our sins. If we keep our end of the agreement, he promises to give us eternal life. God sealed the contract with the blood of Jesus and then by giving us his Spirit as a down payment. We accepted it by confessing our faith in Jesus, turning from sin and being buried and raised with him in the likeness of his burial and resurrection. We are reminded of this agreement each time we partake of his supper.
Heavenly Father I am so thankful for your love and your grace shown to me in the giving of your Son on the cross. Help me be faithful to you in all I do and in all I say but also in the hidden motives of my heart. Use me to reach out to others and share the gospel with those who do not know you and to share your love to all those around me. Open my eyes to see opportunities help others. Put me where you want me to be, to do what you want me to do. In Jesus name.
