Daily Devotional: Psalms 62:7-12

Ps 62:7-12

7 My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. 8 Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. Selah 9 Lowborn men are but a breath, the highborn are but a lie; if weighed on a balance, they are nothing; together they are only a breath. 10 Do not trust in extortion or take pride in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them. 11 one thing God has spoken, two things have I heard: that you, O God, are strong, 12 and that you, O Lord, are loving. Surely you will reward each person according to what he has done.

Eph 6:10-12

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

While digging in the ground, I hit a rock. It seemed to be a “normal” rock so I began to uncover it so I could get my shovel under one side of it and pull it from the ground. But the more I uncovered the larger the rock seemed to be. Finally I realized that it was so large that I would probably never get it all uncovered and even if I did, I could not remove it from where it was lodged. It was huge!

While this illustration is fiction, it demonstrates the vast subject of God and our faith in him. The more we study about God and the more we ponder his majesty, the more we realize that he is beyond our ability to comprehend. The more we learn about the subject of faith (our belief in God as God, our trust in him which compels us to submit and to obey him) the more we realize that it is the basis of our pleasing him and therefore it is the basis of our salvation in Christ.

We must believe that God is and that he is the rewarder of those who seek him. We are on earth to fear, respect and submit to God as God with the realization that we will ultimately be judged by him for our willingness to keep his word and to live for him. This is why Jesus said we must give up our selves and take up his cross daily and then follow him. So we no longer live but Christ lives in us.

Lord God, increase my faith, my belief and my trust in you as God. Give me wisdom to know and understand your word and then strength to live it in my life. Help me give up self so your Spirit can really control me, my thoughts, and my actions. I know that it is in doing this that I can have your joy and peace in my heart. Forgive me when I fail to be all you want me to be. Give your strength to overcome to those being persecuted for their faith. In Jesus name.
