Daily Devotional: Psalms 68:1-6
Ps 68:1-6
1 May God arise, may his enemies be scattered; may his foes flee before him. 2 As smoke is blown away by the wind, may you blow them away; as wax melts before the fire, may the wicked perish before God. 3 But may the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; may they be happy and joyful. 4 Sing to God, sing praise to his name, extol him who rides on the clouds--his name is the LORD--and rejoice before him. 5 A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. 6 God sets the lonely in families, he leads forth the prisoners with singing but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.
Rom 12:9-10
9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.
Do we really hate evil? David was a man after the heart of God and this is seen in his hatred of evil and all sin. He was not perfect and some of his sin is recorded for us to see he was one of us with our same temptations. But when he was made aware of his sin and it really sunk in, he repented (without excuses) and asked God to forgive him. He did not want to be around evil or wicked people.
He also loved what was good and righteous. He found pleasure in doing good, in helping those who needed help and in finding justice for the poor. He was what we call filthy rich and he had more power than any other person in his time but he never lost sight of the fact that it was all given to him from the hand of God and that it was his to use for the glory of God. He enjoyed his position as king but never forgot the “little” man and woman. He helped widows and orphans.
It seems that his greatest pleasure in life was praising God. He wrote the book of songs we call Psalms. He constantly worshipped God with all his being. When he brought the Ark into the city, he was dancing and praising God. He did not hold back his emotions in his praise and was not ashamed for others to see his heart felt devotion to the Lord. But his goal was not self-pleasure or excitement. His goal was to bring glory and honor to God in all he did. It is in putting God first that we find true joy, peace and happiness. Love the Lord God with all your heart.
Heavenly Father give me a greater love for righteousness and truth and a genuine hatred for sin, evil and all wickedness. Create in me a pure heart and a steadfast spirit. Open my eyes to see every opportunity to do good and open my heart to be giving and sharing with what you have given me. Fill me with your love and a heart of compassion instead of being selfish and judgmental toward others. Use me in your service as you know best. Be with and bless those who are sick and those who are hurting and give them your peace. I pray in Jesus name.
