Daily Devotional: Psalms 106:28-33
Ps 106:28-33
They yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods; they provoked the LORD to anger by their wicked deeds, and a plague broke out among them. But Phinehas stood up and intervened, and the plague was checked. This was credited to him as righteousness for endless generations to come. By the waters of Meribah they angered the LORD, and trouble came to Moses because of them; for they rebelled against the Spirit of God, and rash words came from Moses' lips.
Phil 2:12-13
Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed-not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence-continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.
Sometimes we think we are just one person and so there is nothing we can do about the situation we are in. Phinehas was willing to intervene and because he did, God spared the people of Israel who were being punished for their sin. His action also was credited to him as righteousness, which means that it found favor with God as well as serving a good purpose for the Israelite nation.
What can we do as an individual? We can stand up for what is right. That means we defend the honor of God when his name is blasphemed or when people take his name in vain or when they accuse him falsely. We can stand for the truth when we hear others making fun of the Bible or when we hear them abuse it by misapplication of what is written. We can be like Jesus in our attitude and life.
Whenever we live for Christ and let others see him living in us, we will save others and save ourselves. This means we do what is right, even when there is no one else around and no one will know what we do or say. We work out our salvation by working out what God has worked in us, according to his good purpose. We allow his Spirit to mold us into his likeness. A big part of the work of the Spirit is seen by his fruit, but it is within us and is our attitudes and what we really are inside. Jesus said you can know a tree by its fruit.
Heavenly Father I am so thankful for your love shown to me in more ways than I can possible know or understand. Thank you for giving me so many wonderful friends and such a loving family. Use me in your service to do your will and keep me from being selfish. Give me wisdom to understand what you want me to do and to know when to speak and when to be quiet. Be with our nation as a whole and be with each of your people that we seek to do what is right, even when it means being ridiculed for our faith. I pray in the name of Jesus.
