Daily Devotional: Psalms 118:25-29

Ps 118:25-29

O LORD, save us; O LORD, grant us success. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD. From the house of the LORD, we bless you. The LORD is God, and he has made his light shine upon us. With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession up to the horns of the altar. You are my God, and I will give you thanks; you are my God, and I will exalt you. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.

1 Thess 5:16-24

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. Do not put out the Spirit's fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil. May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.

We all have so much for which to be thankful. In our culture, it is easy for us to look around at others and compare what we have to what it looks like they have, and then we either get discouraged or proud. One thing about life is that there will always be someone who has something that we do not have and we will have things that others do not have. But the important thing is not what or how much we have, but what are we doing with it and are we giving God thanks for it?

Being around children, especially small ones, is good for us older folks. They remind us of the simplicity of life and the importance of small things. When they pray at a meal, they will often give thanks for their plate, their fork, their spoon, and then mommy, daddy, sister, the dog, and the list goes on and on. We smile, but we should be learning to give thanks for all things, in all circumstances.

We often begin our day with a prayer for God to watch over us. We need to remember to thank him at the end of the day for his care. He kept us from being hit by that car or provided that parking place or prompted that lady to hold a door when we had our arms full or to tell us we looked nice when we were having a really rough day. If we believe enough to pray, give him thanks for his answers.

O Lord God, I am thankful for what you do for me every day. Thank you for my physical health that allows me to continue to go and do. Thank you for my mental abilities that allow me to write these devotionals, and hopefully help someone in the process. Thank you for my wonderful wife, my son, and his family, and all my siblings and their families also. Thank you for allowing me to work with others who love you and want to live for you. Use me to lift the load of someone who is struggling or who is hurting. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus, your Son.
