Daily Devotional: Psalms 119:33-40

Ps 119:33-40           He

Teach me, O LORD, to follow your decrees; then I will keep them to the end. Give me understanding, and I will keep your law and obey it with all my heart. Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight. Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word. Fulfill your promise to your servant, so that you may be feared. Take away the disgrace I dread, for your laws are good. How I long for your precepts! Preserve my life in your righteousness.

2 Peter 1:2-4

Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

The more we immerse ourselves in the word of God, the more we will want to do his will. The more we do his will, the more we will be filled with his peace and his joy will be in our hearts. As we begin to put Jesus, and his will, ahead of ourselves, we will find more delight in learning about him and trying to become like him in all things. As we are more and more filled with his Spirit, we find the cares and toils of this life seem as nothing. Our joy is always in Jesus Christ!

We cannot imitate Jesus if we do not know Jesus. We cannot know Jesus if we do not know his word and his will for us. To know his will requires that we study his word and we spend time in prayer, seeking his wisdom from above. The more we learn and practice, the more he reveals to our understanding. The more we are molded into his image, the closer he becomes to us and walks with us.

Godliness begets godliness. Worldliness begets worldliness. When we walk by the Spirit, and we put to death the flesh and its desires, we find ourselves living for God and serving others around us. The more we give of ourselves, the happier we are and the more peace we will find in our hearts. Jesus is our joy.

Lord God, it is with thanksgiving that I come to you today and ask you to guide me in your will with your wisdom. As I seek to know you and become like Jesus, I ask you to give me understanding but tempered with love, patience, and kindness. I need you to open my eyes to the opportunities around me to help others and in so doing, to honor you and glorify your name. Forgive me when I fail. Use me to lift the spirits of someone who is struggling with life. I pray in Jesus name.
