Daily Devotional: Psalms 122:1-9
Ps 122:1-9
I rejoiced with those who said to me, "Let us go to the house of the LORD." Our feet are standing in your gates, O Jerusalem. Jerusalem is built like a city that is closely compacted together. That is where the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, to praise the name of the LORD according to the statute given to Israel. There the thrones for judgment stand, the thrones of the house of David. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: "May those who love you be secure. May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels." For the sake of my brothers and friends, I will say, "Peace be within you." For the sake of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek your prosperity.
Heb 12:22-24
But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made perfect, to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
We need to have as much zeal for the people of God (the city of God, the church of Jesus Christ) as did David. When he faced the giant, he went in the name of the Lord because Goliath had defied the God of Israel. Any slander on the people of God is slander against God. Since we are his children, we should honor him and his name in all we do. Our life is a reflection of Jesus to the world around us.
There is peace within his walls. The heavenly Jerusalem is where we meet with the Lord and sing with the angels. Some feel that this is just in the next life, but we are in a special relationship with Jesus and with the Father now, in this life and in him we find inner peace. This translates to peace with those around us.
The church (all the saved – not a building or some institution) is a foretaste of heaven itself because we are in communion with God and his Son as we live for him and shine his light to a dark world. It is in this relationship that we have our security and assurance that God is with us in all we face and all we do.
Heavenly Father, giver of life and sustainer of all things. You have created all things and you hold the future in your hands. I know that you put people in places of authority as you know best and even though I do not always understand why, I trust you in it. Help me show each person in a position of authority the respect they deserve, even when I do not agree with them or what they do. Help me treat others (and talk about them) as I would want them to treat me (and talk about me). Be with our leaders and guide them to do what is right. In Jesus name.
