Daily Devotional: Psalms 124:1-8
Ps 124:1-8
If the LORD had not been on our side--let Israel say--if the LORD had not been on our side when men attacked us, when their anger flared against us, they would have swallowed us alive; the flood would have engulfed us, the torrent would have swept over us, the raging waters would have swept us away. Praise be to the LORD, who has not let us be torn by their teeth. We have escaped like a bird out of the fowler's snare; the snare has been broken, and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.
Rom 8:26-29
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
God has made his choice. He wants to be on our side in all we face in life. It is now up to us to decide if we want to be on his side. We can do all things through Christ Jesus our Lord but without him we can do nothing. So if the Lord is not on our side – let us say – if the Lord is not on our side, we will face all kinds of trials and problems that could have been avoided. We still have some trials and we still have our problems, but with the Lord we are victorious over all of them.
One of the blessings we enjoy is knowing that the Spirit will intercede for us when we do not know how to pray. When we are filled with grief or pain and we just open our hearts to God, the Spirit will read what we feel and express it in words that only God can know. He will then take the worst of things and work it for our good. But remember, our ultimate good is to be with him in eternity.
Praise be to the Lord who has given us so much in this life and who has protected us when we have been faced with so many problems. He may not take away our problem or even our pain but he will give us the strength to get through it and then he will use it for our good, so we can honor him and help someone else.
Heavenly Father, I do praise you for your wonderful and infinite wisdom, wisdom that is based on your love. Use me to help someone else in their trials. Forgive me when I fail to be all you want me to be. Thank you for allowing me to be your child and to know the blessings in Jesus Christ. Be with our nation. Give your wisdom to our leaders, from the local, up to the federal level so that we can live peaceable and quiet lives. Give your healing to the sick and peace to the grieving and joy to the downtrodden. Increase my faith every day. I pray in the name of Jesus.
