Daily Devotional: Psalms 134:1-3

Ps 134:1-3

Praise the LORD, all you servants of the LORD who minister by night in the house of the LORD. Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and praise the LORD. May the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth, bless you from Zion.

1 Peter 1:3-6

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade-kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.

What a blessing to be in Christ and to know that we have the favor of the God who made us and who owns all things. He is all powerful and he controls all that is around us. He can use the worst situation to make things good in our lives. He can take the greatest tragedy and use it to bless us and others. When we focus on serving him and giving him our all, he continues to forgive us of our sins.

A really big step in finding his peace in our lives and living in joy is when we realize that this world is not our home, we are just passing through. The best thing that can possibly happen to us is when we leave this world and go to be with him in eternity. This is why we are told to fix our eyes on Jesus and on the things above, where he is seated on the right hand of God. This is why we are to seek first his kingdom and his righteousness. So, the Bible ends with: “come quickly Lord Jesus.”

As we live in this wicked world with all the sin and all the trials we face each day, we focus on being like Jesus. We are to enjoy the things he has given to us and we are to use them to help others. The reason we are on earth is to honor God, and this we do when we serve him and recognize that we will stand before him in judgment. He has given us his Spirit to help us by giving us strength and wisdom and by guiding us in our understanding of his word. With his Spirit in us, we can do more than we can think or even imagine, as we shine like stars in a dark sky.

Lord God, great and supreme, majestic, and glorious, all praise and honor I give to you and to your holy name. I stand in awe before you as I consider your majesty and compare that to my pitiful existence, so frail and so sinful in my humanity. I ask you to empower me with your Spirit to accomplish what you want me to do with my life, and then to give you all the glory. Thank you for taking care of my family and me each day. Thank you for our health. Thank you for Jesus, your Son, and my Savior and for the forgiveness I have in him. In his name I pray.
