Daily Devotional: Psalms 135:8-14
Ps 135:8-14
He struck down the firstborn of Egypt, the firstborn of men and animals. He sent his signs and wonders into your midst, O Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants. He struck down many nations and killed mighty kings--Sihon king of the Amorites, Og king of Bashan and all the kings of Canaan--and he gave their land as an inheritance, an inheritance to his people Israel. Your name, O LORD, endures forever, your renown, O LORD, through all generations. For the LORD will vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants.
Heb 2:14-18
Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death-that is, the devil- and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham's descendants. For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
When we learn that God is in control of all things, from what happens to us each day all the way up to the world governments, we realize that we can trust him and not worry or fret. He unites the couple in marriage and he puts the Prime Minister in power. While we may not understand how he does this and how we still have the ability to make life decisions on our own, we can believe it and put our faith in him. Jesus is our brother, our friend, our Savior, and our King.
“The Lord will vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants.” What a glorious thought this is when we suffer or when we are mistreated or when we cannot understand what is happening to us and why it is so. Who has known the mind of the Lord? Obviously, none of us have! But this is even more reason for us to put our trust in him and rely on his care for us. We live in a wicked and unfair world, but we know that life is not about now and here, but life is about eternity and being with the Lord forever. He will give his strength to those who trust him.
O Lord God it is difficult at times to keep going with all the troubles in life and all the evil in the world. Since I have not seen you in person, it is easy to let my eyes get distracted by the things of this world. When I see others prosper in their wicked ways and I see how much fun some of them seem to have, it is tempting to give up serving you and going with the world. Yet, I know that you will bring all things into judgment and this world is passing away. Help me keep focused on Jesus and things above and increase my faith. I pray in his holy name.
