Daily Devotional: Psalms 145:15-21
Ps 145:15-21
The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time. You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing. The LORD is righteous in all his ways and loving toward all he has made. The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them. The LORD watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy. My mouth will speak in praise of the LORD. Let every creature praise his holy name for ever and ever.
Matt 22:23-29 (with some omissions for sake of space)
That same day the Sadducees came to him with a question. "Teacher," they said, "Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and have children for him. Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, he left his wife to his brother. The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. Finally, the woman died. Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven since all of them were married to her?" Jesus replied, "You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.
I used this story only for part of the answer of Jesus. He told the Sadducees they were in error because they did not know the Scriptures or the power of God. We fail to grasp the power of God far too often. We doubt that he can really do what he tells us he can do in our lives. Just because he does not use miracles in our age as he did in New Testament times, does not mean that he is not still working.
A four-year-old son of a friend of ours recently had a cat to get killed by a car. He immediately told his friend that they needed to start praying really hard and God would bring his cat back to life. When his mother began explaining that God would probably not do that, he said: “do you not believe God can do anything?” She said she did and he said: “well, it doesn’t sound like it”.
While God may not resurrect our cat, he can do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us. We need to ask without doubting, seek in faith, and then we may have to wait but we will find.
Lord God, Father of all good things, you are my God and you are all powerful and all wise. Keep me from ever doubting what you can accomplish in me when I am in your will. Help me overcome my stubbornness. Instill more self-control in me so I will get done what you want me to do. Lord, be with our nation that we can live in peace. Give our leaders your wisdom to guide us in the right direction. Help them understand that you alone are God, and that you put them in the position of authority that they are in today. Forgive me when I sin. In Jesus name.
