Daily Devotional: Psalms 150:1-6

Ps 150:1-6

Praise the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens. Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness. Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and flute, praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD.

James 5:13

Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise.

We often decry those who feel entitled to things in life. They feel they deserve to have the very best or they deserve for someone to support them. They deserve for others to treat them with special favors or honor. It often seems that we have a generation of entitled young people, many of whom feel that their debts should be forgiven, because they deserve it. We worked hard for what we have and they should do the same. After all, it is only fair to earn your own way.

Yet, how do we treat God in this regard? Do we feel that we are entitled to his blessings? Does he owe us a life of ease or a life that has no bumps in the road? We complain when things are not like we think they should be or we doubt his goodness when we face some tragedy. We ask and do not get, but do we ask with wrong motives, asking so we that can use it on our own selfish desires?

Entitlement is the opposite of thanksgiving. We often talk about God’s grace in regard to salvation. While this is a part of his grace, do we consider his grace when we breathe his air, or enjoy his sunshine, or watch the rain as it waters the plants so they grow? It is by his grace that we have a job to buy food to eat today, to buy clothes to wear, to have a home in which to comfortably live.

We need to realize that all we have in life is from him. Every good and perfect gift is from above, from the Father of lights. We must be thankful for all things, and this thanksgiving should come out as praise to the Lord. Praise him for his mercy, praise him for his goodness, praise him for his grace and praise him for his love.

O Lord God, I praise you for your love shown to me in ways that I do not even know or realize. Thank you for my life that has been so good in so many ways, even with a few bumps and scrapes along the way. Thank you for my family; for the generations past, and for those of my age, and for those who are younger. Thank you for giving me material things to enjoy and I ask you to help me always be willing to help others, as I have opportunity. Be with those who are sick, those who are grieving, and those who hurt in other ways. I pray in Jesus name.
