Daily Devotional: Psalms 16:1-11
Ps 16:1-11
Keep me safe, O God, for in you I take refuge. I said to the LORD, "You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing." As for the saints who are in the land, they are the glorious ones in whom is all my delight. The sorrows of those will increase who run after other gods. I will not pour out their libations of blood or take up their names on my lips. LORD, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely, I have a delightful inheritance. I will praise the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy one see decay. You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
No matter what the problem, Jesus is the answer. How many times have you heard someone say this and you just really wanted to slap them, or at least question how it applies to your problem? How can Jesus fix my marriage or how is he going to do anything about the way I have been treated or is he really going to bring back my loved one or pay my past due bills or heal my wounds after years of abuse? We utter these platitudes, but how do we make them fit reality?
The truth is that he may or he may not fix any of these. But what he will do for us when we trust him and his saving grace, is that he will give us strength to carry on and he will give us peace in the midst of turmoil, along with mental and emotional rest from our hurt and pain. His love for us is real and gives us absolute security.
The hard part is really putting our trust in him. It is turning loose of control and letting him hold the reigns. We have been told all our lives that we must look out for ourselves and we must take care of ourselves and now we are having to let Jesus take care of us and control us. While I must do my part, I pray for wisdom and wait on him to show me what and how. While I must be strong, I lean on his everlasting arms for that strength, knowing his Spirit will empower me.
Just imagine how many times Joseph wanted to give up. Think about how Moses must have wanted to quit his job or Elijah wanted to pull a Jonah and run. But each of them just kept trusting God and following his bidding for them.
O Lord God, my heavenly Father, increase my faith, give me wisdom, and give me strength to accomplish your will in my life today. Use me to help someone who is struggling or to give comfort to one who is hurting. Even more, give them your incomprehensible peace, your healing, and your joy. In Jesus name.
