Daily Devotional: Psalms 18:46-50
Ps 18:46-50
The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be God my Savior! He is the God who avenges me, who subdues nations under me, who saves me from my enemies. You exalted me above my foes; from violent men you rescued me. Therefore I will praise you among the nations, O LORD; I will sing praises to your name. He gives his king great victories; he shows unfailing kindness to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever.
Acts 13:22
After removing Saul, he made David their king. He testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.'
36-38"For when David had served God's purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed. But the one whom God raised from the dead did not see decay. "Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.
David served God’s purpose in his own generation. If in the early years of his life, you had been one of the brothers of David or if you had been his friend, it would have been really difficult to see God working his purpose in him. He played the harp for Saul when he went crazy, he took care of his father’s sheep and ran errands from home. After Saul became jealous and afraid of David, he spent the next twenty (or so) years as the most wanted fugitive in Israel. Where was God?
It was in this unseeming way that God was getting him ready to serve as King and to be the standard of heart and conduct for all kings to follow. He was learning how to lead, he was learning how to trust God in the worst situations, and how to repent when he failed and sinned. His heart was right with God but more than once, he acted in ways that were not pleasing to the Lord. David was human – like us.
Where is God going with my life and yours today? His plan for us may be to lead a family and train them to serve the Lord. His plan may be that we show others how to trust him when bad things happen to us. We all serve as examples to others, so when we trust the Lord, we are showing someone else how to trust him too.
O Lord God, my Father in heaven, holy is your name in all the earth. You sent your Son, Jesus, to be a servant and to show me how to serve. Help me have the mind of a servant, giving up myself, so I can show others how to serve you also. I need your wisdom every day and I need your strength to be and to do what you want me to become and to do with my life. Give your healing to those who are sick, your peace to those who are troubled, and fill all of us with your joy. Be with your people as we live in such a wicked world. I pray in the name of Jesus.
