Daily Devotional: Psalms 19:7-14
Ps 19:7-14
The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. Who can discern his errors? Forgive my hidden faults. Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then will I be blameless, innocent of great transgression. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.
There is nothing that brings humans more joy than trusting and serving the Lord, and in so doing, to serve others around us. Jesus said it is more blessed to give than to receive. Joy comes when we give up self. Freedom is ours when we give up our will to become the lowest servants of Christ and to righteousness. It is no wonder that Paul says our salvation is from faith unto faith (based on faith from the beginning to the end NIV), because it takes a lot of trust in God to allow him absolute control over our minds, our hearts and our every action in life.
One of the things that helps us with this is knowing that God is love. That means that every facet of his word is there because he loves us and he wants what is best for us – now and in eternity. By following his will, we escape so many of the everyday problems and hardships that so much of the world endures. By having the mind of Christ, we live in constant peace. By being humble we find joy in serving. In love we seek the best for others as we put them ahead of ourselves.
By learning the word of God, we find the guide to our lives. And the truth is that most of the Bible is very easy to understand. Yes, there are some things that are difficult and some we will never fully grasp, but the more we study with an open mind, the more the Spirit reveals to our understanding. The more difficult part is putting the will of God into practice on a regular basis. This takes great faith.
O Lord my Lord, how excellent is your name in all the earth! Thank you for loving me and for taking care of me. Thank you for my family and for so many friends you have put into my life. Help me be a friend to others and to encourage those around me as they seek to know you and live for you. Mend those who are living with broken hearts. Give your indescribable peace to those whose lives are in turmoil. Give your joy to the ones who are burdened with grief, to those with pain, and those with heavy burdens. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
