Daily Devotional: Psalms 20:1-9
Ps 20:1-9
May the LORD answer you when you are in distress; may the name of the God of Jacob protect you. May he send you help from the sanctuary and grant you support from Zion. May he remember all your sacrifices and accept your burnt offerings. Selah May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed. We will shout for joy when you are victorious and will lift up our banners in the name of our God. May the LORD grant all your requests. Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed; he answers him from his holy heaven with the saving power of his right hand. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm. O LORD, save the king! Answer us when we call!
1 Peter 2:9-10
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
When someone belongs to the Lord and is appointed to do his work, that person will receive the constant protection of the Lord. It may be that God has appointed one to be king or someone else to be a godly mother, but the appointment is from God and the protection is the same. We so often pray that God will help us fulfill that special role we play in life as a preacher, a teacher, an elder, or in the profession we practice, but we need to start with who we are, where we are.
Our greatest role in life is to be a good person. Being what God wants us to be from the inside, in our hearts, and then our outward actions. The Christian life is about being what God wants us to become, much more so than doing. When we are what God wants us to be, we will do what he wants us to do.
We are the royal children of the King of kings. We have been shown his mercy and we have been saved by his grace. He has taken us from that lost world of sin and darkness and put us into his kingdom of light and righteousness. As his special people, we are promised his protection and his loving care. The same grace that saves us is given to us daily, so we can show his love and grace to others.
Heavenly Father, I am so thankful for your great love, your tender mercy and your marvelous grace that removes me from the domain of darkness and translates me into the kingdom of your dear Son. Increase my faith as I seek to become more like Jesus in all I think, in all I do and all I say. Help me to be kind, tender-hearted, and forgiving toward others. Give me a servant heart. Use me to lift up those who stumble and strengthen those who are weak. Be with our nation and our leaders, so that we can live in peace as we serve you. I pray in the name of Jesus.
