Daily Devotional: Psalms 25:8-15

Ps 25:8-15

Good and upright is the LORD; therefore he instructs sinners in his ways. He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way. All the ways of the LORD are loving and faithful for those who keep the demands of his covenant. For the sake of your name, O LORD, forgive my iniquity, though it is great. Who, then, is the man that fears the LORD? He will instruct him in the way chosen for him. He will spend his days in prosperity, and his descendants will inherit the land. The LORD confides in those who fear him; he makes his covenant known to them. My eyes are ever on the LORD, for only he will release my feet from the snare.

Rom 3:21-24

But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

Paul has been discussing how the Jewish people, although they were the chosen people of God, had all sinned against him because they failed to keep the law of Moses perfectly. The Law was good and there was no fault in it. The writer of the book of Hebrews says that God found fault with the people and therefore the law had to be changed. If a law could save, it would have been the Law of Moses.

The Gentiles, even though not God’s special people and living without a written law for them, could not keep their conscience clean. They failed without a law to be what they knew within themselves they should be. So, all have sinned.

What is sin? It is when one falls short of the glory of God. That is a high standard, living up to the glory of God! Another way of putting it is when we fail to follow the will of God in any way, we have sinned. The terrible thing about this is that the just penalty of sin is death (forever separated from God). But the good news is that by faith we can be justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Jesus Christ. The free gift of God is eternal life, forever with God.

Heavenly Father, I am so glad that you have provided a way for my sin to be forgiven in Jesus Christ. Help me recognize that any failure to live up to your glory is the sin that separates me from you. With this in mind, help me set my eyes on Jesus and seek to be like him in all things. When I do fail (sin), give me a heart that is willing to admit my wrong and turn from it. Since I am forgiven by your grace and forgiveness, keep me from ever judging others who are also saved by grace. Be with those who are troubled and give them peace. I pray in Jesus' name.
