Daily Devotional: Psalms 34:8-14
Ps 34:8-14
Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him. Fear the LORD, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing. The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD. Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days, keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies. Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.
2 Cor 1:3-5
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.
“Try it, you will like it.” The world is full of people who have never tried serving the Lord Jesus, so they have very negative ideas about what this means. For them, the idea of trusting Jesus is equivalent to giving up all freedom and being confined to a life of misery. Just the opposite is true. In Christ we find real freedom. In him we can live the abundant life. The more we taste the Lord, the better he becomes.
He is the God of comfort. No matter what we face in life, no matter how difficult it seems at the time, no matter how much it scares us, he can fill our hearts with peace and joy. The same God who feeds the animals in the wild and who brings a song from the birds and who changes the colors of the leaves on the trees and who paints the breathtaking sunset is the God who loves us and has promised he will take care of us. We are worth far more than the animals and trees.
But the hard part is giving up self and giving up the idea that we have control. The fact is that we have very little control over what happens to us. Accidents, broken relationships, sickness, disease, financial markets crash, famines, tornadoes, and the list of “uncontrollable” things goes on. God can control every one of these with only a word. This is the God we trust. Jesus, his Son, is the Lord we serve.
O Lord God, what a Savior is Jesus my Lord. Even today my life is filled with things that seems insurmountable, and yet, I know that you are in control and that there is no reason for me to worry or be anxious. But God, that is easier to say than it is to do at times, so I need your help, your strength and I need more faith every day of my life. Help me focus on what I can do to help others instead of myself. Use me to serve those around me and make their lives better as I show them how to trust you. Thank you for being a God that I can trust. In Jesus name.
