Daily Devotional: Psalms 40:6-10

Ps 40:6-10

Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you have pierced; burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require. Then I said, "Here I am, I have come--it is written about me in the scroll. I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart." I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, as you know, O LORD. I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and salvation. I do not conceal your love and your truth from the great assembly.

Heb 10:8-10

First, he said, "Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them" (although the law required them to be made). Then he said, "Here I am, I have come to do your will." He sets aside the first to establish the second. And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

“Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” Jesus came to earth, lived as a man, and died on the cross, because he loves you and me. It was his love for us that held him on that cross and not the nails in his hands and feet. His love for us is beyond our ability to grasp but is a love that we should emulate.

But even more than his love for us, it was his love for the Father that caused him to give up the glories of heaven, take the form of a servant man and to accept the mocking, the torture and the humiliation leading up to his death on the cross. It was because of this love for God that he wanted to do his will at any cost. This is why he prayed in the garden: “not my will, but your will be done.”

Put this with the time he was teaching his disciples to pray and told them to pray that the will of God be done on earth, even as it is in heaven. Jesus demonstrated how the will of God is done in heaven, and then how it should be done on earth. When God expresses his will to the heavenly beings, it is done. It is done without question, without deviation. The will of God in heaven is final. When we know his will for us, it should be final. We obey him because we love him. We obey him because we trust him. We obey him because our will is to do his will. Period.

O Lord God, help me better understand your position as God, as Supreme. Give me a heart that wants to do your will to the very best of my ability. Help me remember that even when I have done everything I can to obey you, that I have still failed you in so many ways, and that my righteousness is only because of your forgiveness. Thank you for loving me and allowing me to be your child. Be with those who are sick, those who are filled with grief, and those who are hurting, and give them your healing and your peace. I pray in the name of Jesus.
