Daily Devotional: Psalms 59:6-11
Ps 59:6-11
They return at evening, snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city. See what they spew from their mouths--they spew out swords from their lips, and they say, "Who can hear us?" But you, O LORD, laugh at them; you scoff at all those nations. O my Strength, I watch for you; you, O God, are my fortress, my loving God. God will go before me and will let me gloat over those who slander me. But do not kill them, O Lord our shield, or my people will forget. In your might make them wander about and bring them down.
Rom 13:1-2
Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.
Kings rise and kings fall. Kingdoms come and kingdoms go. Nations grow strong, only to become weak and disappear. World powers have existed from the earliest of days but each of them has been destroyed or have decayed from within. The only power that never fails is the power of God. Every king, every president, every city councilman, and any other officials, exist because God has allowed them to occupy that position. Be it dictator or elected official, God put them in power.
As Christians, we are not told to support the ones we like or that we agree with, but we are told to respect the ruler in charge and submit to them. In our nation, this means that we are to show respect to the Democrats in power and we are to show respect to the Republicans and Independents as well. God put them there and to be disrespectful to them is to be disrespectful to God.
One of the things that seems to be lost in our world today is the ability to show respect and even love those with whom we disagree. To say that an action or lifestyle is sinful does not mean we hate that person. It means we believe that God wants them to change and we love them enough that we say so. We are to love everyone, even our enemies as well as those we think are wrong.
O Lord God, my heavenly Father, I thank you for your marvelous love shown to me in Jesus Christ. Help me have total faith in Jesus as my Savior and therefore devote my life to him in every way. I need your wisdom in knowing how to live and what to do each day. Be with the leaders of our nation, both the majority and those who are in the minority. Give them wisdom to respect you as God and to want to follow your will. Give us peace in our land. Be with your people who live in places where they are persecuted for their faith. I pray in the blessed name of Jesus.
