Daily Devotional: Psalms 62:7-12

Ps 62:7-12

My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. Selah Lowborn men are but a breath, the highborn are but a lie; if weighed on a balance, they are nothing; together they are only a breath. Do not trust in extortion or take pride in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them. One thing God has spoken, two things have I heard: that you, O God, are strong, and that you, O Lord, are loving. Surely you will reward each person according to what he has done.

1 Peter 2:1-3

Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

Who is God? How do we even begin to understand a God that is so far above us and a God who has no limits, other than those that come from his justice? This same God (the only true God) has no limit on his power. This awesome power is controlled by his absolute and complete knowledge along with infinite wisdom. He is not limited by time or space and has no frailties of matter. His majesty is so far above us and our minds that we cannot rally fathom him in our minds.

God is love. That means that everything he does is for the good of his creation. He is full of compassion and tender mercy. But he is a God of vengeance and is called a consuming fire. There are things that he hates, things that are an abomination to him. Anything that is contrary to his nature and his will or that does not measure up to his glory is sin. Because he is a just God, sin must be punished, and punished by death. “The soul that sins, it will die.” “The wages of sin is death.”

In his infinite wisdom, because of his tender mercy, and out of his great love, he sent his Son to the earth to die for our sin. He showed true love by sending Jesus to be our substitute sacrifice for sin. We do not deserve to be forgiven but he offers it to us in Jesus anyway. In Christ we have tasted that the Lord is good, so we devote our lives to him and allow his love to overflow to all those around us.

O Lord God, my heavenly Father, thank you. Thank you for your love, your mercy, your compassion, and your grace shown to me in Jesus Christ. Fill me daily with your Spirit so I will show Jesus living in me. Control my every word, so all I say will be beneficial to others and will bring glory to you. I sit in my house in ease and enjoy, even without thought, all the wonderful blessings you have showered upon me. At the same time there are so many who are hurting, who are suffering, who are without daily necessities. Use me to help them. I pray in Jesus’ name.
