Daily Devotional: Psalms 89:19-24

Ps 89:19-24

Once you spoke in a vision, to your faithful people you said: "I have bestowed strength on a warrior; I have exalted a young man from among the people. I have found David my servant; with my sacred oil I have anointed him. My hand will sustain him; surely my arm will strengthen him. No enemy will subject him to tribute; no wicked man will oppress him. I will crush his foes before him and strike down his adversaries. My faithful love will be with him, and through my name his horn will be exalted.

Mark 1:16-18

As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."  At once they left their nets and followed him.

David was a shepherd when he was called to be king. This was one of the lowliest jobs among the Jewish people. God uses small things and small people to do great things. Gideon was only allowed to have an army of three hundred, while going against the enemy that was so great, it is described as innumerable. God used this small band of men to kill 120,000 swordsmen that day. Jesus used five loaves of bread, along with two small fish to feed between 10,000 and 15,000 (5,000 besides women and children) people. But then God spoke the word, and all that we know came into existence – and it came from nothing.

Who are we to question God? When we open our eyes to the many opportunities around us, God will use us to do his work. It may be a small thing that we are asked to do, but only God can measure the results. Paul said that he planted the gospel, Apollos watered it, but God gives the increase. There is a song that says we can count the seeds in an apple, but who can count the apples in a seed?

One word of encouragement may do wonders in the life of that person who is struggling. Just a listening ear can make a big difference. Kindness is an expression of love, and it can be shown to everyone. While some like to talk about their troubles, there are many who hide them behind a smile or a façade of joy. Let each of us allow God to use us today to make someone’s life brighter.

O God, creator of all things, thank you for all the wonderful people you have put into my life over the years. Thank you for those who have helped me make the right decisions, and those who just listened and let me make my own. Thank you for the times people encouraged me and lifted me up when I was down. Use me today to help someone in what they face. Thank you for the physical blessings you have given me. Keep me from being selfish. I pray in the name of Jesus.
