Daily Devotional: Psalms 89:25-29
Ps 89:25-29
I will set his [David’s] hand over the sea, his right hand over the rivers. He will call out to me, 'You are my Father, my God, the Rock my Savior.' I will also appoint him my firstborn, the most exalted of the kings of the earth. I will maintain my love to him forever, and my covenant with him will never fail. I will establish his line forever, his throne as long as the heavens endure.
Col 1:13
For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
God’s word is sure. He promised David that his descendants would be on the throne, over the people of God, forever. Jesus is the fulfilment of that promise, and he is King over the spiritual kingdom of Israel today. Jesus proclaimed, just before his ascension, that all power (all authority) had been given to him in heaven and on earth. Paul said that when the end comes, Jesus will hand the kingdom back to the Father. Jesus is king of Kings and lord of Lords!
But this King is also our Redeemer. He is our Savior because he is the sacrifice for our sins. He is the author of our salvation and the giver of our new covenant with God. Jesus is our High Priest and intercedes for us before the Father. This same Jesus is our brother and our friend who loves us and cares for us every day.
What all this means is that we are subject to him and to his word. God’s covenant through Christ is not negotiable but is based on the terms he has offered. Only in Christ can we find salvation. In him we live and move and have our very being, because in him we find purpose and meaning for our lives. While this world is our temporary dwelling, he supplies our needs, and he gives us peace and joy.
But life can be hard and often we do not see his intervention. We seek answers for why things happen as they do, but we come up empty. Wicked people seem to prosper while we are trying to serve him and suffer all kinds of problems. While we may never find all the answers to our questions, we know that God knows best. He hears and responds to our prayers. When the time is right, he gives us what we need to make us ready to live with him in eternity. So, we trust him!
O God, faith is knowing the unknown and seeing the unseen, so I need greater faith, faith that will sustain me when things seem to make no sense to me. Too often I try to fit you in my box and even measure your wisdom by my reasoning. Please forgive me for this and help me open my eyes of faith to see your greatness and your majesty, that is beyond my comprehension. Thank you for all you do for me, even the hard times that I must endure. I pray in the name of Jesus.
