Daily Devotional: Psalms 90:1-6
Ps 90:1-6
Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. You turn men back to dust, saying, "Return to dust, O sons of men." For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night. You sweep men away in the sleep of death; they are like the new grass of the morning — though in the morning it springs up new, by evening it is dry and withered.
James 4:14
Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
When we try to think about God and wrap our minds around who he is, one of the things that is beyond our scope is eternity, the absence of time. Everything we do is measured, and especially our time. We plan. We wait. We limit ourselves. It may be seconds on the microwave or it may be years until we reach a certain event in our lives that is so important. Our life is measured by time but not so with God.
The only role that time plays with God, is in his plan for mankind when things happen because “the time is right”. When the time was right, God delivered Israel from Egypt. When the time was right, he invaded Canaan and destroyed many wicked nations. When the time was right, he sent the Christ. And when the time is right, Jesus will return to receive those who belong to him.
Quick lessons: We have no idea how long we will live so we must always be ready to meet the Lord. This means we are always trusting him and serving him. We need to use our time wisely. Take advantage of every opportunity to do good, to help others, and to share the gospel. Enjoy your youth while you are young and you can, because if you do live longer, the time will come when you will not be able to do many things that you take for granted today. Grow old with dignity and share the wisdom you have gained by your many experiences. It is natural for young people to look to those who are older for advice – even if they won’t admit it or act like they don’t want it. Be a good example for all to follow to see Jesus.
O Lord God, give me wisdom to number my days and to use each moment to honor you and to help others. Keep me from ever thinking that life is about me or my desires but use me to serve, especially when you are the only one who will know what I did. Help me be kind to others. Put a smile on my face and grace my lips with gentle words. Give me wisdom and patience to listen to others and to be genuinely interested and concerned about them, their joys and their sorrows. I know I fail too often, forgive me. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
