Daily Devotional: Psalms 108:1-5
Ps 108:1-5
My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing and make music with all my soul. Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn. I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. For great is your love, higher than the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens, and let your glory be over all the earth.
Eph 5:19-20
Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Notice that Paul says we are “always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” In times of joy, we give thanks to him. In times of sorrow, we give thanks to him, both for what he has done for us and also for what we know he will do for us in the future. When things are mundane, just an ordinary day, not especially good but not bad either, we give thanks to God for the evenness and tranquility in our lives. This is one of the keys to giving up anxiety and worry in our lives – giving thanks in all things. We offer our prayers and make our requests with thanksgiving. Praise the Lord!
We must never forget that God loves us. No matter where we go or what we do, he still loves us. There is no created thing that can separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ our Lord. When we are good, he loves us. When we get off track and do things that hurt him, he loves us. Even when we “fly in his face” with rage or abusive language, he still loves us and wants us to turn back to him. Like the father in the parable of the prodigal son, he is patiently waiting for us to return home. He does not want anyone to perish, but for all to be saved.
So, no matter what we face today, lets praise God with thanksgiving. Giving thanks will increase our faith as we openly recognize that all we have is from him. As we acknowledge this, we will see even more of his work in our lives. Complaining breeds more complaining and makes us (and everyone else) miserable. Giving thanks will produce more thanksgiving, resulting in inner peace indescribable.
O Lord God, thank you for loving me and forgiving me in Jesus Christ. Thank you for making me a part of your family, making you my Father and Jesus my brother. Thank you for the really good days in my life. Thank you for the ones that are not so good. Help me use all of these to make me a better person and to draw closer to you as my God. Lord, there are some who are dear to me, who are sick, who are suffering, who are facing all kinds of trials. I ask you to be with each of them, give them healing and peace and joy. With thanksgiving, in the name of Jesus.
