Daily Devotional: Psalms 114:1-8
Ps 114:1-8
When Israel came out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of foreign tongue, Judah became God's sanctuary, Israel his dominion. The sea looked and fled, the Jordan turned back; the mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs. Why was it, O sea, that you fled, O Jordan, that you turned back, you mountains, that you skipped like rams, you hills, like lambs? Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob, who turned the rock into a pool, the hard rock into springs of water.
Phil 4:11-13
Not that I speak from want; for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.
When God delivered his people from the bondage in Egypt, he provided all they needed, one day at a time. As they traveled toward the land of promise, they encountered times of drought and times when food was scarce. God sent water from a rock to nourish the entire nation and all of their livestock. To put this in perspective, it would be like providing enough water for Houston Texas.
For these same people he provided daily food. He gave them manna, a wafer-like bread that could be eaten raw or it could be cooked. Every morning there would be a fresh batch on the ground, with enough for everyone to have their fill. When this no longer satisfied them, he gave the quail each day also. But their food was only there for six days a week, with double on Friday so they did not have to work on the Sabbath. Instead of being thankful for God’s provisions, they complained.
God blesses us each day. Jesus said for us to not worry about tomorrow because each day has enough trouble of its own. We cannot live in yesterday, nor can we live in tomorrow, so be thankful for today and all it brings. For most of us, we have much more than just the necessities, we have an abundance. Do not be anxious about anything. Be content. Rejoice in the Lord. Give thanks for everything.
O Lord God, who fed the nation of Israel in the wilderness, who gave them water to drink, who parted the waters of the Red Sea and the Jordan River, thank you for providing all my needs every day. You have blessed me in more ways than I can possibly count or even know. Thank you for giving me a new “today” without the troubles of yesterday and free from worry about tomorrow. Help me use this day to honor you and to bring glory to your name. Thank you for loving me, even when I was and am, unlovable. Help me share your love. In Jesus name I pray.
