Daily Devotional: Psalms 117

Ps 117

Praise the Lord, all you nations; extol him, all you peoples. For great is his love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.

Rom 15:13

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Big things come in small packages. Some of the shortest verses in the Bible give us some of the greatest truths for our lives. Praise the Lord, his love endures forever! Jesus wept! We were all dead, BUT GOD…! God so loved the world that he gave his unique (one of a kind) Son! We are buried with Christ through baptism so that, just as Christ was raised to live, we are raised to live a new life in him.

God loves us, he always has, and he always will. Even when we make a really bad mess of our lives, he still loves us. Remember the prodigal son? The father loved both of his sons; the one who stayed home and did everything right, but also the one who spit in his face, took his money, and wasted it on self-indulgence. When he came home, he was still his son and he still loved him. God loves us!

We all get down. We all have times that we want to give up. We ask ourselves if there is any real purpose and is it worth it? Remember that short prayer of Peter as he began sinking in the waves: Lord, save me! Jesus will reach out his hand and take us to safety, just as he did for his friend that night.

O Lord God, great is your love and your faithfulness toward me. Fill me with your joy and peace as I trust in you so that I will overflow with hope and the power of your Holy Spirit. Give me a servant heart and use me to help others in whatever way you make possible for me. Give your peace to those who have lost someone they love and help them lean on you each day as they face the loneliness, the pain, and the grief in so many forms. Lord, as we face election in our country, give us leaders who are truly interested in the good of our country and who respect you as God, and who will work toward healing the division and hatred that is far too prevalent. Help your people avoid the extremes that engender bitterness, as we show the love of Jesus, even to those with whom we disagree. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus my Lord and to his glory, now and forever.
