Daily Devotional: Psalms 119:1-8

Ps 119:1-8 Aleph

Blessed are they whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord. Blessed are they who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart. They do nothing wrong; they walk in his ways. You have laid down precepts that are to be fully obeyed. Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees! Then I would not be put to shame when I consider all your commands. I will praise you with an upright heart as I learn your righteous laws. I will obey your decrees; do not utterly forsake me.

Rom 7:21-25, 8:1-2

So, I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God's law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God — through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law, but in the flesh, a slave to the law of sin. Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.

David said that he knew the law of God and he wanted to be steadfast in obeying his decrees. We all know that David sinned, on multiple occasions. He was a man after the heart of God and sought to live for him all the time, but even he failed in doing this. When he sinned, he repented. He turned back to God to live for him.

Like Paul, when we honestly examine ourselves, we may want to live for God and be just like Jesus, but we fail, and we sin at times. But also, like Paul, we must be devoted to serving God and living for him – this is our lifestyle – we live for Jesus, and he lives in us. So, when we do sin, the blood of Jesus continues to cleanse us, and we are forgiven. This means that the law of sin and death (the wages of sin is death) is negated for us because in Christ Jesus we are set free by the Spirit of life.

We can live our lives, knowing every day that if this is the last day of our life, we will go and be with the Lord in eternity. (Hebrews 10:34) But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved.

O Lord, it is such a wonderful blessing to be able to know that my sins are being forgiven as I live each day. I know that I am not perfect, and I do sin in things I do or say or in things I fail to do or say. Yet, in Christ, I am able to sleep at night with a clear conscience because I know there is no condemnation toward me. Keep me from ever using your grace as a license to sin, as though sin does not matter. Give me wisdom to know and do your will each day. I pray in the name of Jesus.
