Daily Devotional: Psalms 119:137-144

Ps 119:137-144      Tsadhe

Righteous are you, O Lord, and your laws are right. The statutes you have laid down are righteous; they are fully trustworthy. My zeal wears me out, for my enemies ignore your words. Your promises have been thoroughly tested, and your servant loves them. Though I am lowly and despised, I do not forget your precepts. Your righteousness is everlasting, and your law is true. Trouble and distress have come upon me, but your commands are my delight. Your statutes are forever right; give me understanding that I may live.

Col 1:9-12

For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.

God is right. His law is right. His statues are right. Jesus is the exact representation of the Father, so he is right. He is truth. He is the way. On the other hand, Satan is the great deceiver, and he is the father of all lies. We must choose which one we will believe, and which one we will follow. When it is put like this, it seems to be a no brainer and the answer is obvious. We will do right and follow Jesus.

But in real life, we are tempted to believe the lies of Satan. Not the big lies about God or that sin doesn’t matter. It is the little lies that get us. Lies that come in the form of excuses. Lies that come in the form of “just this one time” or “it won’t hurt anyone” or “nobody will ever know” or… and the list goes on.

This is why we are told to “set aside THE SIN that so easily entangles us”. THE SIN is probably not the same sin for each of us. It may change over time as things change. You probably know what this sin is for you. Or it may be that we have hidden or denied it so long we don’t recognize it. It is always right to do right.

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the things your hand has made, I stand in reverence and praise your holy name. Your power, your majesty, your holiness, your wisdom, your eternal nature, and all of your divine attributes are beyond my ability to comprehend. I want to be like you but when I consider me, my life, my frailties, my failures, and compare me to you, I realize that I am nothing. Yet, in praise and thanksgiving, I can come to you because by the blood of Jesus you count me as righteous, free from sin. I thank you in his name.
