Daily Devotional: Psalms 131:1-3
Ps 131:1-3
My heart is not proud, O Lord, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me. But I have stilled and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me. O Israel, put your hope in the Lord both now and forevermore.
Rom 12:14-16
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.
Have you ever thought about the peace and tranquility of Adam and Eve, living in the garden of Eden? The worst problem they had – O wait! They did not have any problems. There was no such thing as worry because they knew that God had provided them with all they needed. They had no reason to get in a tizzy or in a rush because life was filled with just enough to keep them busy but not bored.
This was because they totally trusted God and his promises to them. They just lived for him and did what he told them to do. That is, until they began to doubt if God really cared or if they were just being manipulated. When they began to entertain the words of Satan, they lost their confidence in God and in turn, they lost their peace and tranquility, they began to wonder “what if” and they sinned.
When we have the quiet trust in God that David exemplified, we can have the peace and tranquility in our lives that God intended that we enjoy. We put our hope (our entire future) and our trust in God because we know that he will give us just what we need today – in every way, and then tomorrow, he will do the same for us again. Jesus said not to worry, each day has enough trouble of its own.
We serve a risen Savior who knows our needs. He has been in our shoes. He has faced what we face. He cares about you today and tomorrow. He understands your pain. He feels your grief. He realizes how hard it is to be strong and not give in to that sin that so easily besets us. He is always before the Father on our behalf, and he gives us his Spirit to empower us. His love for us never fails.
O Lord my God, what a delight to know that I can trust you in all things! There is nothing too big for you to handle and nothing so small that you don’t care. I know that in every part of my life, my joys or my struggles, you are with me, and your Spirit is living in me and helping me. Be with those who are hurting, physically, emotionally, and in other ways. Give them your peace and use me to help them when possible. Be with your people all over the world. Give us leaders that will listen to you and respect you as God. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
