Daily Devotional: Psalms 139:13-18

Ps 139:13-18

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you.

Col 1:17

He [Jesus Christ] is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

God knew you before you were born. Of course, we do not know what God may choose to know, but he has the ability to know us, even centuries before we are conceived. On more than one occasion he named someone who would do a certain thing, hundreds of years in the future. (Not knowing the mind of God in its fullness, I cannot explain how our free will works with his pre-knowledge.)

The point of the Psalm is that God cares about each of us, even before we take our first breath. Once we are born, he is ever present with us and uses us for his will, if we are willing to submit to him. He will not forsake us nor will he ever quit caring for and loving us. No matter how hard things are, he will always walk with us.

God planned Moses and his life. He got him ready for his mission (the first eighty years) and then used him (the last forty years). Moses was the Lawgiver. He was the one who delivered Israel from slavery and led them to the promised land. He is held up as a man of faith and is said to be more meek than any, other than Jesus. Moses was a great man. But God also planned Aaron and Miriam, the brother and sister of Moses. God got both of them ready and then used them to help Moses accomplish his task. Each of them had a unique role in the plan of God. Miriam was a great encourager and advisor. Aaron was the spokesperson and became the first High Priest. And don’t forget their parents, Amram and Jochebed who spared the life of Moses and used Miriam to carry out the plan (unknown to them) of God. We may not be a Moses, but God can use us in his way and in his time.

O Lord God, use me in your will to help others and to honor your holy name. I don’t have to be a Moses, but I can be a Miriam and sing praises to you and help others do your will. I pray that you will be with those who are serving you in the very difficult circumstances and in the face of persecution. Thank you for the blessings I have by being born in this time and place, and to the parents you gave me. It is by your grace that I am who I am. Thank you. I pray in the name of Jesus.
