Daily Devotional: Proverbs 5:1-6

Prov 5:1-6

My son, be attentive to my wisdom; incline your ear to my understanding, that you may keep discretion, and your lips may guard knowledge. For the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil, but in the end, she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps follow the path to Sheol; she does not ponder the path of life; her ways wander, and she does not know it.

Heb 13:4

Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.

When I was younger, there was a philosophy that was called the “new morality” which consisted of immorality. It was what is known today as hedonism, and it basically allows anyone to do whatever they feel is good for them at the moment. It was not new then and it is not new now. It is the same ageless immorality, based on the same disregard for God and for his moral purity.

While most who practice this philosophy are not aware that it even has a name, it is common among a lot of people in our society today. It is also known in scripture as “licentiousness” or “sensuality”, and it simply means acting without restraint. If it feels good, do it. We only live once, so live it up. Make the most of the moment. This is the path of a fool, and it leads to ruin, both now and in eternity.

This chapter in Proverbs deals with the folly of going after the immoral woman. It shows many ways that she uses to seduce the young man who does not realize the implications of his lack of moral restraint or the beauty and wisdom of the sanctity of monogamy and marriage. He also does not take into account the fact that God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous person. This advice is just as relevant today as when given and it applies equally to people of all ages and both genders. Moral purity is a reflection of the purity of God.

O Lord God, give me a steadfast spirit and a pure heart. Help me focus on that which is right, wholesome, and godly in every way. Remind me every day that my life is a reflection on you and on Jesus as my Lord. Give me wisdom, strength, and self-control to be like Jesus in all I do and all I say so that others will see him living in me. Lord, please be with our nation. Guide our leaders. Give us people who respect you and who will follow your wisdom so that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness. Give your healing to those who are sick and taking treatments. Give peace and encouragement to those who are hurting and those who are lonely. I pray in the holy name of Jesus my Savior.
