Daily Devotional: Proverbs 5:7-14

Prov 5:7-14

And now, O sons, listen to me, and do not depart from the words of my mouth. Keep your way far from her [the immoral woman], and do not go near the door of her house, lest you give your honor to others and your years to the merciless, lest strangers take their fill of your strength, and your labors go to the house of a foreigner, and at the end of your life you groan, when your flesh and body are consumed, and you say, “How I hated discipline, and my heart despised reproof! I did not listen to the voice of my teachers or incline my ear to my instructors. I am at the brink of utter ruin in the assembled congregation.”

Heb 11:24-26

By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward.

From secular history we read that Moses was a very handsome young man. He was educated and trained by the Pharaoh to be a general in the Egyptian army and to perhaps be the next Pharaoh. He was very popular with the people and admired by all the women. With the wealth of his royal family, the fame of his position, and his personal charisma, he was probably tempted often to sin.

But immorality flourishes in every age of time. It is just as prevalent among one class of society as it is at the opposite extreme. It is as tempting for the older as it is for those who are young and is attractive to both men and women, boys and girls. It is a fleeting pleasure but can, and often does, carry with it the most dire consequences, which ruins marriages and destroys lives.

For so many, that moment of pleasure has left them with a lifetime of regret. It has destroyed friendships and family relationships. Probably the two leading motives of murder has always been greed and jealousy because of immorality.

We must choose the reproach of Christ as greater than the pleasures of sin for a moment, as we look to the eternal reward. Moral purity brings us greater joy and deeper inner peace than any immoral act can possibly produce.

O Lord God, thank you for giving us the relationship of marriage, with all of its beauty and immense pleasures. Yes, there are times that it requires a lot of work for us both to keep things the ways you want them to be between us. But it is always possible, and it is always worth the effort. Thank you for showing us how to love each other, even as Christ loves us. You answered our parents prayers when you put my wife into my life. Thank you! Lord, be with those who are taking treatments and awaiting other procedures. I pray in the name of Jesus.
