Daily Devotional: Proverbs 11:1-6
Prov 11:1-6
A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is his delight. When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom. The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them. Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death. The righteousness of the blameless keeps his way straight, but the wicked falls by his own wickedness. The righteousness of the upright delivers them, but the treacherous are taken captive by their lust.
Matt 5:5-6
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
With humility comes wisdom. Wisdom produces humility. This is because the wise person recognizes that life is not about him or her, life is bigger than any one of us as individuals. Even my own life, even your personal life is bigger than just the one of us. Life is from God and life is about our attitude and our service to him. This is why we have read several times that the beginning of wisdom is the knowledge of the Lord and the fear of the Lord. God is the purpose and meaning of life.
Humility is meekness. Humility is not weakness. It is a recognition of the power we have within us, the wisdom given to us, the gift of forgiveness bestowed on us in Jesus Christ. The key is that we know that we have these things (plus a host of others), not on our own but because God has given them to us in his Son. Thus, Paul declared that he could do all things through Christ Jesus our Lord.
Therefore, when we have accomplished all that we can do, no matter how great or how small that may be (remember the parable of the talents), we give God the glory for what he has done through us and with us. We do not take any of the credit because it was not our doing. It is by grace which takes away boasting.
Humility has no room for bragging. It has no reason to try to prove anything about “us” to anyone because we give God all the credit. Humility does not look for praise or honor because this belongs to God. Jesus was meek because he sought only to do the will of the Father. Moses was meek because he knew that God parted the water, not anything he had done on his own.
O Lord God, help me rid myself of myself and never let pride get in the way of being what you want me to become. Help me accomplish great things that are in your will but to never forget that whatever is done, it is from you and by your power. You made me and you gave me whatever abilities I have, so you deserve the glory for every good thing I do in life. Give me greater wisdom. Use me as your servant. Forgive me when I fail. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
