Daily Devotional: Proverbs 19:26-29

Prov 19:26-29

26 He who does violence to his father and chases away his mother is a son who brings shame and reproach. 27 Cease to hear instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge. 28 A worthless witness mocks at justice, and the mouth of the wicked devours iniquity. 29 Condemnation is ready for scoffers and beating for the backs of fools.

Matt 13:12-14, 16

For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand… But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.

James said that if we lack wisdom, we are to pray and God will give it generously, but we must ask without doubting. God’s word is filled with wisdom for us, but as the Spirit lives in us, he helps our understanding, which leads to wisdom. Jesus says that the more we understand, the more we will be able to understand. Deep truths are revealed to us as we put little truths together.

We must listen to God, and we do this by studying his word. Jesus is the word of God made manifest to us. Jesus is truth and he is life. He lived among men and in doing so, he revealed the truth of God to all mankind. When he left this earth, Jesus sent the Spirit to his disciples who have written the revealed word to us, which we have in the form of our Bible.

Jesus explains to us in our reading the same thing that Paul wrote in his letter to the Corinthians. To those who are spiritually minded, the Spirit will give understanding of God’s word. But those who do not have their minds set on the Spirit will never comprehend what is being taught.

All of this just says we are to study and rightly divide the word, and then pray for wisdom to understand it. But knowing, and even understanding it, will not do us any good if we do not put it into practice in our lives. In fact, we are told that it is better to not have known than to know and not follow it. Let God lead us.

O Lord, guard, guide, and direct me. Your will be done on earth, and in my life, even as it is done in heaven. I know that your will is always done in heaven, just as you want it to be done, so give me the heart that will follow you in all things. Give me wisdom because I need it every day. I need it to understand your word, but I also need it to guide me in my daily decisions. Give me eyes to see your will for me and the willingness to act accordingly. Be with your people that we will show your love by living peaceful lives in godliness. I pray in Jesus’ name.
