Daily Devotional: Proverbs 23:19-25

Prov 23:19-25

19 Hear, my son, and be wise, and direct your heart in the way. 20 Be not among drunkards or among gluttonous eaters of meat, 21 for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and slumber will clothe them with rags. 22 Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old. 23 Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding. 24 The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him. 25 Let your father and mother be glad; let her who bore you rejoice.

Rom 14:17-19, 22

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding… The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who has no reason to pass judgment on himself for what he approves.

Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding. All truth is from God. Truth is absolute. Genuine logic is based on wise application of truth. God has revealed his truth to us in the word and it is personified in Jesus. It is of utmost importance that we study the word of God and apply it to our lives the very best we can. Study, pray for wisdom and you will find understanding.

While we can learn from others, whether it be in written or verbal form, we must always remember that what we are getting is just their understanding of truth. It must be measured by each of us, using the Bible as the standard of truth. Our feelings and emotions can be wrong. Our observations may be wrong. Other people may be wrong, no matter how much we respect their knowledge.

When you have studied and you understand the truth, do not sell it because of what others may think or say. Truth is often not popular. The one thing that Jesus had to battle the most was the common thinking of the Jewish Rabbis and what they were teaching. Tradition may not be truth. Your faith (what you believe) is between you and God. Make sure it is truth by studying his word.

O Lord God, give me wisdom to understand your truth and strength to stand for it, even when it is not popular or when others may not agree. Help me always speak the truth in love, but also realizing that I can be wrong when someone does not agree with me. Help me keep an open mind when I study and a willingness to change when I see that I am wrong. Lord, thank you for all you do for me each day of my life. Help me use my life to your glory. I pray in the name of Jesus.
