Daily Devotional: Proverbs 23:26-28

Prov 23:26-28

26 My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways. 27 For a prostitute is a deep pit; an adulteress is a narrow well. 28 She lies in wait like a robber and increases the traitors among mankind.

1 Cor 6:9-11

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

For many among the more conservative disciples of Christ the recent push by the LGBT groups has caused a focus on certain types of immorality while ignoring the sinfulness of all immorality. Premarital sex or extra-marital sex is just as sinful as is homosexuality. Changing ones gender is an afront to God because it defies what he has created. Our body is the temple of God, and this demeans his temple.

God’s plan for society is the traditional family model of one man with one woman, for life. This “old fashioned” plan is the only way to build a strong and lasting society. But even this only works when God is at the center of the family and all we do is built on his word and his values. This kind of marriage brings a stability to the spouses, the parents and to the children that no other can offer.

How do we make it work in a culture of “throw-away” spouses, where when things get tough, we just bail out and try another one? I suggest that our teaching should focus more on the positive side of marriage, instead of all the possibilities of what one can or cannot do if the marriage fails. This can be avoided when we just make the marriage work. Without divorce, we don’t argue over remarriage.

We must teach people to love the Lord God above all else, then find someone to marry who shares this conviction. Know that when we make the vows, it is before God – that is, we are promising God that we will make it work. There will be trouble and times that it seems that there is no way, but with a commitment to each other and to God, any two people who want to make it work, can do so.

O Lord God, give me a strong home, one that is founded on a love for you and a desire to be like Jesus. Help all of your people to know that the closest thing to heaven on earth is a happy marriage and the oneness that comes from this. Help me remember that I have given myself to my wife and that I belong to her, even as she belongs to me. Help us both try to out-serve each other. I thank you for putting her into my life as my best friend and my wife. In Jesus’ name.
