Daily Devotional: Proverbs 26:6-10

Prov 26:6-10

6 Whoever sends a message by the hand of a fool cuts off his own feet and drinks violence. 7 Like a lame man’s legs, which hang useless, is a proverb in the mouth of fools. 8 Like one who binds the stone in the sling is one who gives honor to a fool. 9 Like a thorn that goes up into the hand of a drunkard is a proverb in the mouth of fools. 10 Like an archer who wounds everyone is one who hires a passing fool or drunkard.

1 Cor 15:33-34

Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.” Wake up from your drunken stupor, as is right, and do not go on sinning. For some have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.

The “bad company” in this passage is the same as the “fool” in Proverbs. It is the person who does not know God, the one who does not acknowledge Jesus as Lord of Lords and King of Kings, and the one who does not recognize him as the risen Son of God. This person will corrupt good morals because without God in our lives, without Jesus leading us, there is no logical reason to be moral.

The surprising (and shameful) thing is that the fools that Paul referred to were part of the body of Christ at Corinth. They claimed to be followers of Jesus but denied the resurrection. They, like the Sadducees in Israel, had a useless form of religion because it was only for this life and denied the eternal reward. This is because they only thought and reasoned about what they could see and feel.

This is the same mistake that many make today when they look for salvation based on what they can do or by knowing all of the right things. They reason only what they can see and what they can accomplish instead of putting their faith in God and what he has done through Jesus. Interestingly, this is the same mistake that some make when they deny that the Holy Spirit actually lives in us (as the Bible plainly says) because they cannot explain how he can be seen or heard or touched. When we put our trust in our physical senses, we are failing to put our trust in God and in the work of Jesus on the cross. Faith is seeing the unseen, based on the fact that God said it, even without physical evidence.

O Lord God, giver of life, creator of all things, glorious and majestic beyond my ability to even comprehend, I praise you and I put my faith in you. Thank you for sending Jesus to live on earth as a man and then giving his life for my sin. Thank you for continually cleansing me from all unrighteousness by his blood as I continue to live for you in him. Increase my faith every day until it becomes reality in eternity with you. Thank you for guiding our nation at every level as we face the upcoming elections, so I don’t have to worry about it. I pray in Jesus name.
