Daily Devotional: Proverbs 26:11-16

Prov 26:11-16

11 Like a dog that returns to his vomit is a fool who repeats his folly. 12 Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him. 13 The sluggard says, “There is a lion in the road! There is a lion in the streets!” 14 As a door turns on its hinges, so does a sluggard on his bed. 15 The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; it wears him out to bring it back to his mouth. 16 The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who can answer sensibly.

Gal 6:9-10

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

One of the problems of the sluggard (one who is lazy) is the lack of responsibility, which effects both them and all the people in their circle. This includes parents who do not provide for their children, husbands who do not take care of their wives and families, wives who never fulfil their duties in the home. This in turn teaches their children to become lazy and follow their upbringing.

This lack of responsibility often goes over into their moral and even legal lives because they are always trying to find a “short cut” to providing a livelihood instead of working for a living. They expect society to provide for them, while they waste what they have on their own foolish and selfish desires.

Never get tired of doing good. Jesus went about doing good. He healed a lot of his own Jewish people, but there were times that he healed and taught those who were outsiders, both Samaritans and Gentiles. He told the story of the Samaritan who helped the beaten Jew while the religious men passed him by, to show that our responsibility to help others transcends ethnic or racial backgrounds.

We are to do good to everyone when the opportunity arises. It may be financial help, or it may by just a kind word, or like Peter and John it may be the most valuable gift we have to give, sharing Jesus Christ with one who is lost. Do good!

O Lord God, my heavenly Father, I thank you and I praise you for your wonderful love, for your marvelous grace, and for your tender mercies shown to me every day of my life. You have blessed me in so many ways and I can never repay you with anything except by giving you my heart and my life. Use me to do good. I need you to remove all prejudice from my heart and open my eyes to see each opportunity to serve others that you put in my life. Keep me from being selfish. Be with our nation and guide our elections at every level that we may continue to enjoy the freedoms we have in our land. I pray in the name of Jesus.
