Daily Devotional: Proverbs 27:23-27
Prov 27:23-27
23 Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds, 24 for riches do not last forever; and does a crown endure to all generations? 25 When the grass is gone and the new growth appears and the vegetation of the mountains is gathered, 26 the lambs will provide your clothing, and the goats the price of a field. 27 There will be enough goats’ milk for your food, for the food of your household and maintenance for your girls.
Eph 5:15-17
Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
When I get a haircut and it is not cut the way I wanted it to be, it doesn’t cause me to worry because it will grow back (at least on the sides – but the top has been gone so long, I don’t even count that part). When mowing my yard and the mower leaves a gap or something looks uneven, there is no need to be upset, it will grow back. A lot of things fix themselves if we just leave them alone.
When time is gone, it is gone forever. When our children begin going to school, all those precious years that have passed will never be seen again. When they finish high school, those days are forever gone. Not only is the time gone but all of the opportunities that the time afforded are gone too! When we could have been a better influence, or when we could have taught them about God more at home, or when we could have built better relationships; that is all gone.
Situations arise and we need to say something at that moment, but we just keep silent. That opportunity is gone. When we should have kept our mouth shut but we pull a Peter and blurt out something inappropriate or hurtful, the opportunity to keep silent is gone. Time is precious because with each moment is a unique opportunity for us to honor God. This is the point of the parable that Jesus told about servants being given talents, 5, 2, and 1. The one talent man failed to use his opportunities. He had the ability because each talent had been given in line with their abilities. We cannot know tomorrow, and we cannot change yesterday.
Father, God, creator of all things and giver of life, thank you for what you have given to me in more ways than I can count or even know. Thank you for each opportunity you provide for me to do good and to honor you. Increase my faith so I will take advantage of each moment and use it to you glory. Forgive me when I fail to live up to your glory. Be with our nation that each one of us as citizens will seek peace by showing love for each other. Help me show respect to our leaders, even the ones that I don’t like or agree with. I pray in the name of Jesus.
