Daily Devotional: Psalms 6:1-5

Ps 6:1-5

O Lord, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath. Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing; heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled. My soul also is greatly troubled. But you, O Lord—how long? Turn, O Lord, deliver my life; save me for the sake of your steadfast love. For in death there is no remembrance of you; in Sheol who will give you praise?

2 Thess 2:16-17

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.

As long as we live, we can praise the Lord. When we die, our time of praise on earth is gone. But do we use our time wisely in praise to God? Every facet of our lives is either a hymn of praise to the Lord or it sings the praises of this world. When we honor our parents, we praise the Lord. When a husband and wife show mutual respect to one another, they are lifting up praises to God. When we deal honestly with others or we lift up the fallen or we listen to someone who is down or when we offer a helping hand, we are offering praise to the Lord.

We serve the God of all comforts who comforts us so that we can share his comfort with those around us who need it. Every trial we face in life is to prepare us to help someone else who faces a similar situation in their lives. But what most people need in times of trial is not advice or sermons. What most often is needed is someone who will quietly listen to them and feel their pain but to do it without passing judgment but maybe with a hug. Show the compassion of Jesus.

O Lord God, fill me with your Spirit so that your love will overflow from my heart to all those around me. Fill me with your joy and peace so others will find comfort by being in my presence. Keep me from being judgmental of anyone, especially as I realize that my righteousness before you is based on your gift of forgiveness in Jesus. Thank you for showing me how to be compassionate and kind. Give me a servant heart like the heart of Jesus. In his name I pray.
